Reading Wednesday
Aug. 3rd, 2022 02:37 pmThe Heron's Cry, by Ann Cleeves - This one was pretty heavy; the motive for the murders revolves around the suicide of a young man and the investigation into the treatment--or lack thereof--that the victim was going into. It was very good, though, and I do like Matthew a lot.
Wolf Speaker, by Tamora Pierce - How did I forget about Tkaa before rereading this? He's great. The shape-shifting is great, but having learned a lot about bats and all of the viruses they carry around sure made me nervous about Daine letting them crawl all over her, even though I know she's fine and that Tortall bats, apparently, don't pose the same danger. Also the bit about turning the other mage into a tree is great.
Emperor Mage, by Tamora Pierce - I had also somehow forgotten how much I liked Rikash. It was also neat to be back in Carthak after reading Tempests & Slaughter earlier this year, although having read that also highlighted how very little we see of Varice--which makes sense because the book is from Daine's POV, and ultimately she is presented as extremely sympathetic and Daine is shown to have been wrong about passing earlier judgment, but I really do want to know what happens to her afterward. Also there were bits and pieces of Numair's past in Carthak dropped that are definitely going to come up in the next Numair book and I am increasingly desperate to get my hands on it.
