a signal boost
Mar. 4th, 2023 04:40 pmSo my cousin Alanna has been dealing with her own health issues for at least the past year; she went into surgery for a fatty tumor growing around her spinal cord, and came out of that still with the tumor but also with paralysis from her armpits down. She's in a lot of pain, but the worst part is that her current apartment is not at all accessible, and that means she has a very hard time getting to her necessary appointments, and is bedbound most of the time.
She and her family are hoping to remedy this by renovating a small apartment that's attached to Alanna's sister Natalie's house; it's very small and in very rough shape, and they're hoping to renovate it to make it accessible and to add a bathroom and pair of bedrooms on the ground floor, so Alanna can live there with her two kids and be able to actually live in her space--and also Natalie and her family are right there to help out.
They have a GoFundMe set up, in addition to some other fundraising efforts. So if anyone has a few bucks to spare, that would be much appreciated; and if you donate and want to drop a comment with a request/prompt, I'll write you a ficlet.

i am not throwing away my shot
Apr. 13th, 2021 09:58 amI was not expecting it to be so easy but lo and behold! I and both my sisters are scheduled to receive our first vaccine doses this Saturday afternoon! I made the appointments online which was a huge relief to my phone-anxious brain, and saw there were plenty of slots open so I told Christina and she's rescheduled hers so she doesn't have to wait until the 27th, and we're all getting it the same afternoon so I don't have to drive anyone anywhere separately for either dose. God I can't wait.
And in unrelated news the Awesome Socks Club is open for subscriptions again for a limited time, in case anyone wants a pair of socks a month for a year. I can confirm they are very nice socks.

space is really cool
Jul. 20th, 2020 09:53 pmWe saw the comet! It was finally above the trees tonight (just above), and with our binoculars (god I wish we had a telescope) it was visible as first a small smudge and then, when it got properly dark, as something recognizably a comet, with a tale and everything. I'm so happy we got to see it, with just a couple of days to spare before it's gone for the next few millennia.
And when we turned around there was Jupiter quite bright in the east, and with the binoculars we could see it and three of its moons!

SNOT OTTER
Apr. 23rd, 2019 01:16 pmMy favorite thing to happen this month is that Pennsylvania's legislator has voted (and Governor Wolf has signed) to make the Eastern Hellbender Salamander our state amphibian.
This thing, as the largest salamander in North America, can grow up to two feet long and lives under rocks and in the mud, and is covered in mucus. It has a bunch of names aside from the official one, including mud devil and lasagna lizard.
But my favorite name for it is Snot Otter.
My state's official amphibian is the Snot Otter and I am delighted.

good grief, tumblr
Jan. 7th, 2019 01:35 pmI had my first tumblr post flagged today! It was an old photo, probably from last winter, of snow on some branches. As far as I can tell, nothing in it looks particularly phallic, or resembles a nipple, female presenting or otherwise.
Is it because the branches are otherwise naked? Heaven forbid the children see a leafless shrub!
On a less-stupid note, I am making chicken noodle soup and the house smells delicious. And I am 1.6k words into a fic that hopefully will fulfill prompts for both the Fish and the Main course for the SWG Holiday Feast. I also have to make some sort of post about the readings that I did.

My mom just asked me what it’s called when like “if you watch a movie and then write a short story or a poem or something about it?”
“...fanfic?”
“no like if you write a poem”
“mom, that’s fanfic”
“but what’s the name in your fancy english major...*gestures vaguely*”
“fanfic, but i guess if you really want to get fancy...transformative work?”
I have no idea what even prompted the question in the first place. It's not like she's unaware that I read and write fanfic all the time.
